For six months in 2000 and again in August-Sept 2001 Ruta painted the city from the 9lst floor of the north tower, where he had been invited to join other artists in a communal studio under the aegis of Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. His last painting of the daunting view was lost on September 11, 2001.
