Still life in the Art Students League show. The big busy one is from 2006,37×54 in. and the other, with the scythe or roncola, an old Roman tool still in use today, is from the mid 50s, 28×36 in. It’s as if the painter’s conception of a still life had changed over time. The latest ones, after decades of painting outdoors in rugged landscapes, seem to become “indoor landscapes” at times. Fruit in plastic bags preoccupied Ruta for years. Here the bags sprout baroque wings on top.
