landscapes in the Art Students League show, the top two painted in Chiapas in 1974 and 76, 40×48 in. A watery meadow at the edge of San Cristobal las Casa, a dry piney wood on the northern edge of town. Outdoor painting non stop. Then a hillside in northern New Mexico, from 1992, sometimes so steep Ruta tied himself to a tree to keep his footing and finally, the Hopper House in Truro, seen from just a bit farther inland, 1989. A prolific painter, Ruta did many such views, working seven days a week in various climes.
