When it was time to get with the program as defined by artists and public alike, Ruta seems to have been out of town…But it would be wrong to see his long, steady career as a kind of reverse avantgarde, a willed opposition to modernist certainties. The representational tradition in painting is much stronger in the New World than in Central Europe. One thinks of Edward Hopper, and many other North American realists and romantics.
