Not to be sentimental about it but these are the most recent paintings from New Mexico, where Peter painted from 1981-1999, outdoors in the arroyos, on steep slopes and snowy meadows. These paintings done summer 2005 around the home of Charles and Diana Bell on Canyon Road, a center of hospitality and poetry from the 1970s. By 2005 Diana was gone and Charles about to move to Maine for the rest of his life. And drought had diminished the gardens Danny planted and tended for decades. And who knows what remains of her touch on those grounds were a new sumptuous construction replaced Casa Bell a couple of years ago. Bill Lumpkins designed the house the Bells lived in, he was an architect and painter beloved in Santa Fe. Mais ou sont les neiges d’antan?
