Lilies growing by the well in the courtyard of the house we rented in San Cristobal Las Casas, painted 1975, one of a series. Mexican neighbors called these calla lilies “cartuchos” because the insides of the flowers had long yellow cartridge shaped parts. This painting may have been shown at Larcada Gallery, New York, 1976, but was probably not seen since. Now we are photographing the painter’s entire work for a digital archive, each day brings such surprises and memories of people and places.THe house belonged to Charles and Diana Bell of New Mexico, dear friends who are no longer with us. Peter Ruta painted in Chiapas from 1973-78, some other samples of work from that period posted below and more to come.
