Another of those early paintings that waited in storage from 1962 to 2006, that are finding homes now in Italy and Germany and the US. This painting of an epergne, as it’s called, a three tiered construction of plates, with fruit on display, next to a geranium cutting in a transparent vase, fascinated the collector who bought it a year ago. He framed it tenderly, with his own hands – he’s a sculptor – and then sat and contemplated it all evening, he told us, reflecting on the riddle of inside and outside it represents. He forgot all about the TV.
